Kambo Treatments

What is Kambo?

Kambo is a traditional Amazonian biomedicine derived from the secretion of Phyllomedusa bicolor, also known as the Giant Monkey Frog. For thousands of years, this powerful secretion has been used by Indigenous tribes for its medicinal and ceremonial value.

Rich in hundreds of bioactive peptides, Kambo has been the subject of scientific study for its remarkable healing properties—demonstrating antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and potent analgesic effects, making it a natural source of pain relief.

Yet the power of Kambo extends far beyond the physical. Its effects reach deep into the emotional and spiritual realms. Kambo is known to help release emotional blockages and remove panema—a term that can be translated as bad luck stagnation, laziness, lack of motivation, fear, or indiscipline.

It can assist in processing past traumas, overcoming negative emotional patterns, and shifting limiting perspectives. Many experiences relief from depression, anxiety, and stored emotional trauma. Kambo invites us to let go of what no longer serves, making space for clarity, strength, and renewal.

Is Kambo a Poison?

No.

Kambo is not a poison. Nothing in its secretion suggests that the body perceives it as harmful or toxic. In fact, Kambo is composed of bioactive peptides that interact with the body’s receptor sites as if they were naturally produced by the body itself. The term bioactive refers to substances that activate or modulate brain and body receptors. In the case of Kambo, the secretion does not act as an external drug or poison.

As explained by Professor Vittorio Erspamer—who was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize—Kambo does not produce psychotropic or hallucinogenic effects, nor is it addictive. This is because the reaction it induces is endogenous, meaning it originates within the body’s own systems.

The term “poison” is often used in headlines for shock value, which contributes to a misleading perception of Kambo. A more accurate and respectful term is secretion, honoring the natural intelligence of this powerful medicine.

Kambo Application

Kambo Application

A trained practitioner begins by making small superficial burns—called gates—on the top layers of the skin using the tip of a burning stick, traditionally known by the Matsés tribe as tamishi. These gates are usually placed on the arms or legs, depending on the intention and the individual's needs. Once the skin is prepared, the Kambo secretion is applied directly to the open gates, allowing the peptides to enter the lymphatic system and interact with the body almost immediately.

Before Kambo is applied, participants drink a large amount of water to fill the stomach—this helps facilitate the purging process by flushing out physical and energetic toxins. Within minutes of application, individuals may experience a rapid heartbeat, a sensation of heat rising in the head and body, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases, diarrhea may also occur.

The most intense part of the experience typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes and is often compared to the physical sensations of having the flu or a strong fever. Kambo is not considered painful, but it can be deeply uncomfortable. This discomfort, however, is a vital part of the cleansing process—helping to release what the body and spirit are ready to let go of.

After the session, participants often feel deeply relaxed, renewed, or surprisingly energized.

Preparing for Kambo

In the days leading up to your Kambo ceremony, aim to eat as cleanly and mindfully as possible. Focus on the whole, natural foods that nourish and support your body. Preparing your body with intention and care enhances the effectiveness of the medicine and honors the sacredness of the ritual.

Fasting is essential. Do not eat anything for at least 12 hours before your session. On the day of your ceremony, avoid all food and liquids until instructed otherwise. If needed, one cup of water or herbal tea with a spoon of honey may be taken a few hours before your session—but otherwise, remain in a fasted state.

To support your liver and overall detox process, avoid foods that can create additional strain at least one week before and after Kambo. This includes saturated fats (butter, fatty meats, high-fat dairy) fried foods, soft drinks, and highly processed foods.

Important Precautions:

Do not consume alcohol or recreational drugs for at least 48–72 hours before and after your Kambo ceremony. These substances can interfere with the medicine and the purging process and may increase physical stress on the body.

If you are taking regular prescribed medication, you may continue to do but it's best to avoid taking it the morning of your session to prevent it from being purged before it has time to be absorbed. Always consult with your practitioner if you have any concerns regarding medications and Kambo.

Integration & Aftercare

Rest & Hydration

Take time to rest and integrate the experience. Many people feel deeply relaxed or energized after a session, and it’s essential to honor the body’s needs. Whether you feel the need to rest or reflect, allow space for emotional and physical integration. Continue to drink plenty of water in the days following your session to support the detoxification process. Herbal teas or water with lemon are excellent choices.

Nutrition or "Dieta"

Nourish your body with light, easily digestible foods—preferably organic and whole. Avoid heavy or processed foods for 24-48 hours post-session to allow your body to fully cleanse. Gentle foods like broths, fruits, and vegetables are ideal. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and other substances for at least 48-72 hours to allow your body to rebalance.

Emotional Processing & Reflection

Kambo can bring up powerful emotional releases. It’s important to give yourself grace and space to process any emotions that may surface. Journaling, meditation, or talking with a trusted person can aid in the emotional integration process. After a Kambo ceremony, the effects often continue to unfold over the following days or even weeks. Stay open to new insights, shifts in perspective, and physical sensations. Trust that your body is in a process of profound healing and growth.
